Title:
Mining helmet with carbide lamp, FE, Nictune
Date:
01/01/1940
Description:
Brown plastic mining hardhat helmet (fiberglass?) with carbide lamp on front. Lamp is attached to a stiff leather tab. Interior has headband of leather made adjustable through cotton webbing straps that are threaded through a cord that weaves through holes in the helmet and is held by metal (aluminum?) tabs. Inside the back rim, "FE" in paint stands for Fairbanks Exploration. Green paint writing inside includes "U of A" for University of Alaska, and the exterior front rim has the name "Richard Nictune" on embossed plastic tape.
Notes:
Donor's father, James Crawford was head of the Fairbanks Exploration company, and specialized in dredging. The Ebner Mines in Juneau were for sale between WW1 and WW2, and Crawford came to Juneau to look at possibly buying. He knew Governor Parks and had dinner at the Mansion with the Karlsruhe crew.) The name Richard Nictune on the helmet is unknown, although a search of the internet indicates "Nictune" is mainly an Inupiaq surname, sometimes spelled "Nickdoon"
