Title:
Two Triangular Corners of Large Canvas Tarp from SS Aleutian
Date:
1940
Description:
A — 20 inch by 37 inch
B — 26 inch by 45 inch
2 triangular weathered gray canvas pieces from large tarp. Stenciled "ALEUTIAN" in black 3 inch high block letters on each piece. Each triangular piece has longest edge frayed where torn from larger tarp; 1 edge is bias; 1 edged has 1.375 inch stitched hem; 1.125 inch outer diameter, brass grommet in apex of each piece.
Notes:
Large canvas tarp from which these stenciled corners were cut was approximately 12 inch by 20 inch. Tarp blew off SS Aleutian in Taku wind as it rounded Marmion Island and continued on her way. Tarp was recovered by Thomas S. Parke and used by him as utility tarp for over 50 years. Corners were cut away as souvenirs by Mary Ann Parke, user's daughter, when tarp was deemed beyond reasonable repair.
SO Aleutian plied Alaskan waters from 1930 to 1954.
