Title:
A metal and wood ice axe
Description:
An ice axe with a metal head and point and a wood handle and a hand strap. The head is composed of a long thin "pick" shape and a beveled "hoe" shape. The head has two strips of metal that extend downward and rivet into the handle. The end of the axe is a metal point, possibly for jabbing into the snow or ice when the ice axe is used as a walking stick. It is merely pressed into the handle. There is also a metal cover over the end of the handle near this point, possibly to prevent the wood of the handle from cracking and chipping away when the axe is jabbed into the ground. Finally there is a leather hand strap which is connected to a large, flat metal ring. This ring hangs loosely around the handle, but it is kept on the handle by means of a screw that sticks out from the handle. This screw has six washers under it so that it does not screw further into the handle and make the ring able to slide off the handle. Stamped into the head of the axe is "DOM", and on the other side, "Made Switzerland" and "First Co, Zurich"
