Description:
Sydney Laurence Painting "Early Morning, Juneau, Alaska"
Oil on canvas painting of the Juneau waterfront. Image depicts water in the foreground with a steamship moving toward proper left. Behind the ship is Juneau in early morning light. The top of the canvas shows Mount Juneau lit with a morning sun. At top proper left is the sky above Mount Juneau.
Notes:
The painting looks across Gastineau Channel from near the Douglas shore, likely in late June. Laurence has added houses and waterfront structures to the scene, particularly on the left side. Laurence's viewpoint is today best visited from the viewing platform at Homestead Park, just north of Lawson Creek.

We believe the ship to be the "Catherine D," owned by Pacific American Fisheries of Bellingham, Washington. She spent much of her life carrying passengers and freight to canneries in Western Alaska. She rarely called at Juneau, but in 1918—1919 she was chartered to Pacific Steamship for about a year, making weekly visits here. Laurence could have seen the ship here in Juneau, or perhaps during his many years on Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet.

The painting was likely executed about 1922.
