Description:
Brown bottle with hand carved wood stopper.
A — Bottle. Brown beer style bottle with a long neck. Gase of neck has a raised ring circling it. Back of the bottle has remnants of barnacle growth. Inside the bottle is a petroleum residue. On the bottom of the bottle is stamped the number "21", followed by a logo that is oval with two arrows one pointing toward the number 21 and the other pointing toward the number "4".
B — Carved wood stopper. Bottom of stopper is inserted into the mouth of the bottle. A groove is carved down the center of the stopper so that the oil from inside the bottle will pour slowly out and drip off of the tip of the stopper.
Notes:
Bottles such as these were used by loggers and woodcutter when using a cross cut saw. The bottle held some sort of petroleum product like oil, kerosene or gasoline. While cutting or bucking a tree, the sawyer would drip petrol out of the bottle onto the blade of the saw. This would break up any tar or pitch built up on the blade, and help the blade cut easier.

See "Early Logging Tools" by Kevin Johnson for more information.

This bottle was found by the donor in the sand at Sandy beach, just east of the salt water pump house.
