Adjacent to miner and leaning against partial wall are additional rock bolts and face plates.
Writing in the bronze at front center says: "Split Set 14/50 By Gary Prazen For Jim Scott."

Notes:
Sculpture donated to Museum by Echo Bay Mines and Family & Friends of Christopher Haas in memory of Mr.Haas' death in mining accident in 1994. See documentation file.

Sculpture was originally housed in a glass and wood exhibit case set on legs made of metal drill rods. Overall dimensions: 62 1/2" x 28 1/2". Removed from this case 4/3/2008.

Underground mine openings often must be supported to ensure that miners can work safely. The Treadwell and Alaska—Juneau mines relied on heavy timber beams, called cribbing, to prevent rock falls. Today openings in underground mines are supported by steel rods known as rock bolts. Rock Bolts are favored over timber because they are easier to install and risk of fire is eliminated. Rock bolting is a dangerous task that is often done by the most skilled miners. Many mines now use rock bolting machines to increase the safety of the miners who install the rock bolts. This sculpture was purchased with contributions from Echo Bay miners in memory of Chris Haas who died in a 1994 mining accident.
