Description:
Headdress made of carved wood bear forehead masks, human hair pegged from tops of ears and extending twice as far as chin, abalone insets in ear and leather cap covered with ermines and abalone flowing into ermine—covered white cloth train. Bear face has compress or squashed down proportion with protruding snout. Painted in vivid turquoise, red and black paints with highlights unpainted including teeth. Cap is cylindrical and solid white fur with evenly spaced rectangles of abalone sewn on overall as accents. Three rows of whole ermines sown to cloth train, with dowel sewn into sleeve behind second row for structure. Two ermines behind ears, fifteen in first row, eleven in second, twelve in third (bottom).
Notes:
Commercial house paint used on mask. Copper stand included. Purchased from Beasley's store when it was located on 206 Front Street, before it burned down in summer of 2004.
