Description:
Carved brown bear masks with human hair pegged into tops of both ears and extending past chin. Paints traditional with dog salmon egg binder. Design of triangles carved around edge known as "half head of salmonberry". Eyes set with copper. Face is brown with areas of unpainted wood as highlights and in mouth. Green areas across cheeks, upper lip and chin. Carving done with considerable relief and contours. Inside green with two screwcaps and string for hanging. On reverse" "Tlingit Bear 1991" in ink & M. BEASELY carved into proper left side of back.
Notes:
Wood red alder. Maple also typical. Some use yellow cedar but it cracks easier. No sandpaper used on mask. Brown pigment from chunk of his great grandmother's paint made from burnt fungus. Hair is Tlingit from female relative. Michael is Raven of Coho Clan. Donor said make completed in 2002. Purchased from Beasley's store when it was located on 206 Front Street, before it burned down in summer of 2004.
