Magnetometer with case.
A. — Magnetometer. The main body of the object is a glass sphere. This sphere is made up of two sides that are held togeter by a metal ring. Coming off of the bottom of the sphere is a 8.5 inch cylinder. The cylinder is numbered from 0 to 40. At the bottom of the cylinder is a silver metal dial that rotates, there is a scale on this dial that goes from 0 to 100. At the top of the glass sphere is a second cylinder that holds a magnifying glass which looks into the glass sphere. Inside the sphere there was a group of dials, but these have deteriorated and are now broken and hard to identify.
B. — This object is an oblong instrument. Its center is a rubber tube. On one end is a threaded cap that is designed to screw on to the top cylinder of the magnetometer. On the other end is a metal clamp that can be tightened with two screws. These screws are designed to be tightened and loosened by hand, they both have knurled edges. The one closest to the center of the object is approximately twice the size of the second one.
C. — The case that holds the magnetometer. It is made from a press board. There are clips on the inside designed to hold the instruments in place. There is a Bureau of Mines property sticker on the inside of the cover, number 21312. It has a hand made canvas cover around it. On the front of cover is written: "U.S. Bur. of Mines,/Box 550, Juneau,/Alaska 99801/#8" There are also three red labels that say "GLASS/HANDLE WITH CARE," fixed to the canvas cover. The handle of the case is made from a grey colored polymer.

Notes:
Magnetometers are used to measure the strength of a magnetic field in the vicinity of the instrument. They can be used to test for the presence of magnetite or to give an idea how much magnetic material is present in an ore body. This magnetometer is is probably older than the USBM facility at Mayflower Island.
