A: Instrument
Base is a black metal tube (rectangle). On one end is a round knob that pulls out. There are two metal screws on the top and a hole through which a lens can be seen. The other end is open with a bar half way up. On the bottom "USNM — 2134" is scratched into the metal. A sticker says "Property of United States Bureau of Mines / 2134." On the front side there is a metal instrument that measures percent of incline coming out of the base. It says "Keuffel & Esser Co." and "Percent" on the left hand side. The numbers '150 to 0 and 0 to 150' are written on the bottom of the instrument. In the middle of the piece there is a knob that can be loosened. This moves an arm that is attached to a level.
B: Carrying Case
Orange leather carrying case. Metal button and strap to hold down lid, on front. Lid flips open. The letters "K+E" stamped onto front of lid. Strap to attach to belt on back. The case starts out wide and narrows as it goes to the bottom. Small pouch for Pin inside.
Used to hold instrument.
C: Box
Green cardboard box. Top lifts off. Label on one side that says: TOPOGRAPHIC / ABNEY LEVEL / 2134 / K+E / 5713PD
Used to hold Instrument and Carrying Case.
D: Pin
Small silver pin. Tapered at one end. Fits into small slot on the inside of the carrying case.
