Description:
Pair of beaded killer whale motifs, done on white wool felt backing in blues/purples with red accents, faces on tail and dorsal fin. Abalone buttons for eyes, four mother—of—pearl—buttons used for spine. Each whale is leaping in profile with toothy mouth and full tail fluke visible. A faces right, B faces left.
Notes:
Purchased from the artist. Artist is a member of the Raven moiety, Lukaax.adi clan, child of the Chookaneidi. Artist learned beading from her mother, Emma Marks. Design for killer whales by artist's brother Jimmy Marks., using the traditional family pattern, but different colors and bead shapes. Iridescent beads and abalone buttons were a hallmark of Emma Marks. Similar killer whale motifs were in the 2002 Sealaska Juried Art show.
