Description:
Ceremonial Dance Bib made of red wool felt on the front and a butterfly/ floral cotton print on the back. The sea pigeon and raven heads are done in glass beads with shell details. Abalone and mother—of—pearl buttons form a border around the edge of the bib and stand—up collar. Edges are trimmed in black fabric bias tape and beadwork. Collar ties with leather thongs at the back, "handmade ___" with illegible initials in black ink. Tag on reverse, "Hand Made by Florence M. Sheakley."
Notes:
Purchased from the artist. Artist is a member of the Raven moiety, Lukaax.adi clan, child of the Chookaneidi. She learned beadwork from her mother, Emma Marks. The Sea Pigeon design is Johnny Marks, and the Raven design by Jimmy Marks, both brothers of the artist. Further info on file. The bib was among 18 artworks chosen for the 2001 Sealaska Juried Art Show in partnership with the Alaska State Museum, on exhibit at the ASM from June—Sept 2002.
