Title:
Protrait doll of Dr. Walter Soboleff
Artist — Creator:
Frank, Mary Ellen
Date:
01/01/1998
Description:
Portrait doll, freestanding sculpture of Dr. Walter Soboleff dressed in black leather suit (made to look more like a dark wool suit, leather seems to give it a crispness) with white leather button—down shirt, black necktie, and elaborately painted leather Chilkat robe trimmed with river otter fur. The artist used fabric acrylics and sueded side of white buckskin. Doll face and hands are realistically carved from wood (Alaska yellow cedar) in great detail, with real white hair (Icelandic Sheep) containing a few dark strands, and wire—rimmed eyglasses with watch—crystal lenses. Figure steps forwards slightly with PL leg, PL arm next to side and PR arm slightly forward. Head turns slightly to PR. Figure mounted through the feet to a wooden base with beveled edge and a shape like a Chilkat robe (rectangular with extra point on one long side.)
Notes:
The original of this doll was carved on commission in 1998 as a gift for Walter Soboleff from Dave and Nina Brown. It is unusual she is able to create two dolls from her technique, described in the files. Dr. Soboleff is an honored Tlingit orator, leader, and elder, respected for his work with the ANB and other organizations. Slides and additional info on file.

Joint exhibit labels for 2004.56.002 and 2010.33.001 can be found in the 2012—2013 ANB/ANS exhibit file folder.
