Description:
World Explorer Cruise editorial cartoon by Tony Newman.
Drawing features a cruise ship in the center of the frame, bow facing proper left. The ship has a hole in the side and a fire belching smoke. The ship is named WORLD EXPLORER VIDEOS. A man with a megaphone stands on top of the bridge. The passengers are on the deck below him and he is saying: "DON'T PANIC, FOLKS——WE'VE RADIOED JUNEAU AND THEY'VE ASSURED US SOME DRUNKS ARE ON THE WAY!"
Notes:
In 1996 a cruise ship caught fire in the Inside Passage, killing five crew members and prompting an immediate and thorough rescue from CBJ's first responders. Approximately 1,000 passengers and crew were safely sheltered at Centennial Hall, several dowzen of them were treated at Bartlett Hospital. The diasaster was a textbook example of professional emergeny preparedness.

Shortly afterward, someone noticed that the promotional video distributed by the cruise ship company World Explorer had been discouraging its passengers from spending much time in Juneau describing the city as garish and crowded with drunks. This offended the artist and he did this drawing.

The editor rejected a couple of more caustic versions before agreeing to publish this one.
