"The crucible is a container of refractory (heat—resistant) material made to hold metal or ores heated to high temperatures while they are being purified. The crucible may be an open vessel, dish, mortar, or cauldron that is heated, causing various impurities to be given off into the air or skimmed from the surface. Crucibles from one inch high to this large #10 size were used in the hard rock gold mining process, although this example, shipped to Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company in the 1930's , was never used."
