Description:
Sydney Laurence oil painting "Supper on the Mendenhall Bar."
Vertical format landscape oil painting on canvas with gilt gold frame. Center of painting has a triangular group of spruce trees, with a figure of a man below in the foreground tending a small fire next to a fallen log. A pot is suspended over the fire. The man wears a blue shirt with a red neckerchief and carries an ax. His supplies, including a rifle, are on the ground behind him. He is in the center of a flat, open space. The horizon line is low and the sky is pale green and yellow. Gold frame is somewhat art deco in style, with shapes like draped diamond in the four corners. At top of stretcher, PR: "Blacky" in pen. "Jeanette Shepard" in pencil. At top PL: "___ght Sept 1939 #63" At bottom center of stretcher: "Supper on the Bar #63" in pencil. "BLACKWELL" at upper PL corner of canvas.

Notes:
Landscape painting of a scene on the Mendenhall Flats. The clump of trees at center is thought to be on a knob of bedrock at the east end of the airport runway, behind the modern helicopter hangar. Sea level is two to three feet lower now due to glacial rebound, so the island is bigger today. The smaller trees on the island are smaller today, because the island was logged.
Damage to the frame may be from the 1964 Anchorage earthquake, as a previous owner ran a bookstore there at that time.
