Woodcut print shows man on left with red pants and blue shirt and hammer raised to strike steel drillhead, held by man on right with blue pants and red shirt, into large rock. Two men and a woman look on in immediate foreground. Six figures, including man and woman in Tlingit dress and man looking at watch, observe from behind. Background of green, forested, snow capped mountains and white—clouded blue sky includes image of log cabin church in upper right quarter of print. Single pale green mat; simple black wood frame with glass.
Inscriptions: "Miners' Drilling Contest" at lower left corner. "1/30" at center bottom edge. "Dale DeArmond — imp — 1979" at lower right corner.
Notes:
Acquired by Juneau Centennial Committee. In early gold mining days of Juneau, drilling rock for blasting was done by hand w / teams of 2 miners. Hand drilling was also popular 4th of July contest. Print shows such a contest, w / time keeper & onlookers surrounding drillers. Team that drilled the deepest hole in a set time, usually 10—15 minutes, won contest. CBJ Property #04575
