Dr. Robert Simpson was an optometrist and entrepreneur who owned the Nugget Shop with his wife Belle, in the Simpson Building at 200 Seward. Sign may have been used at original Nugget Shop at 219 S. Franklin. He was also involved in the first Grayline Tours, fur trading, and other endeavors. He was married to Belle Goldstein Simpson. Sign hung on balcony of Nugget Shop to advertise his optometry business. Robert Simpson died in 1952. Roy Box, himself an optometrist, was given sign by Jim Nelson, last manager of Nugget Shop, when it closed in 1970. Jim Nelson lived in Juneau, retired from driving school buses. Dr. Box hung sign in his office in Professional Plaza Complex in Mendenhall Valley until he retired in 2000 and sold his business to Michael Bennett. Dr. Box's son and daughter still live in Juneau, although he and his wife moved south.
