Notes:
From exhibit label: Jim Geraghty was thrilled when he saw this photo album for sale on the internet. He showed copies to local historians Willette Janes, David Stone, and Ron Klein. They confirmed what he suspected…this was a rare find, and needed to come back to Juneau. The images in this photo album represent the range of important mining activities in the Juneau area around 1911. The photographs are by Winter and Pond, but the annotations come from someone with significant technical knowledge of mining engineering. In 1910 the Perseverance Mining Company was sued by the US government for illegal foreign ownership. The following year, the new Alaska Gastineau Mining Company took over the properties. Under the management of Bartlett Lee Thane, the company set up ambitious new plans foreshadowed in this album, such as a hydroelectric plant at Salmon Creek and a new mill at Sheep Creek. The activities documented in this album directly relate to the rise of Juneau as the center of economic development in Alaska, state—of—the—art mining and engineering that led to the hydropower that supplies Juneau today, and the magnificent trail system enjoyed by hikers.
