Black and white photograph of a float plane (sea plane). The plane has a boat—like pontoon base and a four—bladed propeller. There are five men standing on and around the aircraft. One man is smoking, standing at the end of the plane's nose. One man is under the wing. One man is standing on the ground behind the plane's nose. Two men are standing next to the propeller. The man closest to the propeller is James "Jimmie" Mattern. The other men are Russian. Verso has a hand written number "56" in pencil.

Located in photo album (2013.08.011A). Attached to album page by corner tabs. White text on album page below photograph reads: "Russians and Jimmy Mattern". James Joseph (Jimmie) Mattern was an American aviator who made several attempts to circumnavigate the globe. On one attempt his plane went down between Siberia and Alaska.

The album belonged to William G. Brian Harland. He was a mechanic for Alaska—Washington Airways and Alaska Southern Airways. He was based out of Juneau.
