Sheep Creek Valley024 025
The Sheep Creek area went largely unnoticed until the summer of 1887, when gold and silver were discovered on the steep hillside between Silver Bow and Sheep Creek basins. Numerous claims staked, among them the Silver Queen, and mining began in earnest. In the early years, ore was sacked up and sent to smelters down south. Eventually a tram (railroad) bed was built to replace the eight horse pack train that hauled the ore to the mill from some of the mines at the head of the valley. The Nowell Gold Mining Company built an elevated tram track in 1895 to avoid the blockages of heavy snow. They purchased a small locomotive to replace the horses that had previously hauled the ore cars to the mill.
