Treadwell Sheep Creek Power Plant and Interior 026
The Treadwell Mining Company began construction of a hydroelectric power plant at Sheep Creek in the fall of 1909 to supply electrical power to its mines across the channel on Douglas Island. It was the first hydro plant to be built by a mining company in Juneau and still stands today across the creek from the modern fish hatchery out Thane Road. Water was diverted from Sheep Creek by a crib dam and piped to the power house by a 2,600 foot long flume with a 3 foot diameter steel pipeline. It crossed Sheep Creek on a bridge 75 feet above the stream. (This impressive bridge still stands but is difficult to access.) Treadwell converted from steam power to electricity because of the shortage of water during dry periods. The power made here and at Nugget Creek was carried to Treadwell via cable on wooden poles over Gastineau channel. The poles were replaced by steel towers in 1916. Foundations of these towers can still be seen near the Douglas Bridge today. The power plant was purchased by the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Company in 1929, and ran until the closure of their operation in 1944.
