Title:
Booklet of student essays on Floyd Dryden School
Date:
10/01/1973
Scope & Content:
A — Booklet of student essays. 33 essays, handwritten in pen or pencil on sheets of lined white, pink, or blue paper. Essays appear to have been a school assignment; students' names are written in upper corner or on back of each sheet along with date (10/1/73 or 9/28/73) and class period. Some sheets have assignment handwritten at top: "What is Floyd Dryden? a. the building, b. the student body, c. the teachers (Your personal impressions)." Essays generally cover one—half to one side of a sheet. First sheet of lined paper reads (handwritten): "Ms. Clark — More Floyd Dryden "stuff." These letters — or essays — were prepared and presented to him at the dedication — Shirley Steele" (for more on Marilyn Clark and Shirley Steele, see accession file). Essays are bound in folder with brown cardboard back, blue spine, and clear plastic front; typed cover page reads: "12/90 These essays came rolled in a "scroll" with "Mr. Floyd Dryden" handwritten on the outside. It was tied with black yarn. It appears that the essays were presented to Mr. Dryden as a scroll." Written in pencil in upper proper left corner of cover page: "#7, student essays, 1973, regarding dedication of Floyd Dryden Middle School."
B — Original paper cover that was rolled around student essays when they were first presented to Floyd Dryden in 1973. Paper is off—white, approximately 16" x 23", with "Mr. Floyd Dryden" handwritten in black calligraphy near top center. Edges have been partially burned away to create uneven border. Handwritten in pencil in upper pr corner along pr edge: "#7 SCROLL SURROUNDING STUDENT ESSAYS".
C — Black yarn originally tied around "scroll" of student essays. 29" long.
