Per Joan Harju: counter checks were popular in Alaskan town until the late 50's, early 60's. Almost all the bars and stores had them and you just asked for one and filled it out like a modern check, and the bank would deduct from your account. Joan says they made household bookkeeping difficult if a spouse didn't tell you what they spent, and if there were insufficient funds, the bank would simply keep the check until your next paycheck was deposited. Joan thinks 99% of them were written in bars, and people would use them very impulsively.
