Description:
Round metal float with 2.75 inch hollow central axis. Individually hand made (not machined). Weld line circles float at equator. Metal lip or ring at ends of hollow interior cylinder. Float welded around these rings where cylinder attaches to sphere. Float is watertight. Imperfections in welding bead on 1 lip may be source of water inside. Embossed marking (1 inch by 1.25 inch) near axis of 1 end of float.

These floats were used to hang large nets that were strung across Gastineau Channel and other marine passages.. Nets were designed to prevent passage of "enemy" submarines into populated area during WWII. After the war, nets and floats were abandoned on the Mendenhall River Flats near Juneau Airport. Floats varied in size from larger than this to smaller(?) than this one.
