Mountain Transit in wooden case
A — Instrument. Manufactured primarily of brass and painted black. Paint is chipping across the surface of the entire piece. Instrument is composed of three basic sections, a base plate, a central plate and lens assembly on top. The base plate is made from brass and has a female thread. The central body has two leveling bubbles. There is a glass window at center under which is printed in white lettering: " Designed By / Wm. Ainsworth & Sons, / Denver, Colo., U.S.A. / 2723 / Manufactured By / Rocky Mt. Instrument Co. / Denver, Colo" The top section is a long lens assembly with a wheel to one side.
B — Wooden Storage Box. Box is made from wood with two leather straps that buckle on top. Painted on top of th box in plack lettering is the following: U.S.B.M. —371 / U.S. Bureau of Mines, / Box 550, / Juneau, Alaska / 99801. There is a property sticker, with a barcode, on the front side of the box that says: "Department of Interior / Bureau of Land Management / 0417166" Box latches closed with two brass hooks on the front side of the box. One of the 4 bumpers on the bottom of the box on which the box sits, is missing.
C — Auxiliary Telescope. Auxiliary telescopic lens for use underground. Brass metal, painted black with brass knobs. 7.5" long.
D — Lens Cap. Lens cap for the replacement lens. Fits snugly over the large glass end of the lens. Made from metal and painted black.
E — Cylindrical lens shade. Made from metal and painted black. Designed to go over the end of the lens. Has three 3/8" slits cut in the bottom rim of the object.
F — Lens Shade. Cylindrical in shape. Designed to go over the end of the lens. Has three 3/8" slits cut in the bottom of the object. A large circle of material has been cut out of the side of the cylinder and there is a metal rim inside the tube at center forward. Rim is not painted on the bottom side, it is placed at a 45 degree angle to the long barrel of the tube.
G — Key — Metal key shaped like a wing nut. Key has two small nipples at bottom.
H — Screw driver. Metal screw driver with a wooden handle. Molded tin collar around the bottom of the handle where the shaft of the metal screw driver is inserted in the handle, is loose.
I — Nail. Shaft of a wire nail that has had the flat head clipped off of it. Shaft of nail is corroded. Nail was stored in the small forward hole to proper left of t 0he screw driver in the top pl corner of the case. Not labeled.
J — Metal Rod. Metal Rod with a taper at one end , (two)2.25" in length. Rod was stored in the small hole at top pl corner of the case, the small hole closest to the back wall of the case. Not labeled.
K — Metal Piece. Metal piece of indeterminate use. Painted brass. This associated part is stuck in the carrying case to it is impossible to remove, label and describe at this time.
