Alidade in leather covered box.
A — Instrument. Metal alidade painted black. Three parts. Bottom section is a rectangular plate designed to rest on a plane table. There is one circular levelling bubble on the forward section of the plate. On the back section of the plate is engraved the following: "No. 101046 / W.&L.E. Gurley / Troy, N.Y. " Center section is a a metal cylinder that meets the bottom section at a 90 degree angle and is designed to link the top and bottom together. Top section is the telescopic site. It is labelled in red paint: "USBM / A—146." On the forward end of the telescope there is the remains of a Bureau of Land Management bar code sticker
B — Case. Case is made from wood and covered with leather. Corners are capped with decorative brass caps. Two bands of packing tape ring the outside of the case. On the outside of the lid is written: "USBM / A—(?)." There are three stickers adheared to the inside of the lid one from the manufacturer "W&L.E. Gurley," one from the supplier "WM. T. Lindstrom CO." and one that talks about the "zero" of the instrument. There is also a business card from the salesman tacked with six (6) tacks to the underside of the lid. The salesman was: "Ray E. Brown."
C — Lens Shade. Cylinrical metal lens shade painted black. Shade has 3 3/8" incisions in the bottom of the cylinder. Cylinder has been bent out of shape so that it no longer fits on its wooden mount inside the case.
D — Level Bubble. Two basic components to the object. On the bottom is a metal stand with four legs. Attached to the stand with two scres is the second component. The second component is a glass levelling bubble inside a cylindrical metal case. The case has been mahined away at top center so that the bubble can be seen. The glass bubble is marked with a series of 10 lines to help the operator find level.
E — Screw Driver. Metal screw driver with a wooden handle. Overall length 6".

Notes:
Note about the stadia on the underside of the box lid: "In making Stadia Measurements with this instrument remember that the zero of the indicated distance is 1.32 feet in front of the center of the instrument."
