Drawing is three—quarter view head and shoulders portrait of bearded Tlingit man wrapped in Chilkat blanket, wearing cap with braid and official emblem over visor. No mat, simple polished silver metal frame with nonglare glass. Frame removed 2005. CBJ Property #04557.
Inscription: "BILL C. RAY @1979" at lower right.
Notes:
Acquired by Juneau Centennial Committee. Ana—la—hash was a Taku Tlingit Indian leader until his death in 1919, when he was believed to be more than 100 years. old. Portrait is taken from a 1906 photograph by W. H. Case. He is shown wearing a traditional Chilkat Blanket & policeman's cap, designating him as a leader of his people & appointed officer of the local government. His area of influence included much of the shore of Admiralty Island & as far north as Atlin. He was honored by Taku Tlingits for his wisdom & council.
Tlingit spelling "Aan ya laash". Sometimes the spelling is "Anotklosh."
