Title:
Ancient Ivory Tool
Description:
Ancient ivory tool, possibly bone, brown patina. Roughly tubular, dividing into two points at one end with a 1.0 inch long slit between points. Opposite end narrows to a single point flanked by two shorter points lying closer to the body of the tool. Central point on this side has three diagonal lines carved into it, between the other two points. One side of tool is extremely porous; other sides are smoother.
Notes:
Origin: Midden on St. Lawrence Island. From ANAC Cache; Marie Olson used to work for them.
In the 1970's, native craftsmen would come to Juneau and stay in the Prospector, selling items from their hotel. Word—of—mouth went out through local gift shops, and gift shops bought a lot this way.
Possibly used for net manufacture and repair.
