Left foreground show life—size image of bearded man (John Muir) in dark pants, vest, white shirt , and hat holding shallow metal pan in his hand; he faces right side of painting. In middle ground on beach are: man in western dress arranging grey bundle in Native—style canoe in which there is dog; man and woman in Native dress between campfire and white wall tent, woman is carrying wood, man carrying fish and rod. Pot, basket, and box are near fire. Dark green forests behind tent and across channel of water extend up mountain in background, which fills most of right side of painting. Sky is cloudy grey. Simple wood frame. Property #04529
Inscription: "Lobaugh 79" in lower right.
Notes:
Acquired by Juneau Centennial Committee. Painting is a portrait of John Muir and includes his traveling companions, two Tlingits, at undocumented campsite in front of Mount Juneau in fall of 1878, before the discovery of gold.
