Charcoal briquettes such as this could have been used either in the field or in the laboratory. They were used to provide a fireproof surface for blow pipe testing of mineral samples. Geologists could perform a series of tests on a sample and by judging the type of flame, it would be possible for them to make a determination of the minerals present in the sample.
