Description:
Wood Engraving Block
Two—sided wood block. One side has a scene with a child in a dress and braids chasing a butterfly on the beach. A raven is flying toward her from below. Water is behind her and mountains are beneath her, Her hands are outstretched in an attempt to catch the butterfly and both the girl and butterfly are surrounded by a wavy thick border which could signify a cloud. A similar black border outlines the mountains beneath her feet. The engravings are stained a dark black on a light colored wood. The word 'canceled' is engraved near the bottom right—hand corner of the block.

The other side of the block has the image of a large, plump owl resting on a tree branch. More twigs protrude from the upper left—hand corner of the frame. The owl is engraved in great detail with multiple patterns signifying the different levels of feathers. The owl's talons are wrapped around the tree branch which has one twig that protrudes down and out of the frame. A small mouse appears to sit on the owls left foot. The owl and brach engravings are stained a dark black on a light wood base. Again, the word 'canceled' is engraved into the tree branch.

All four sides have light ink residue. On the top side, a black x is marked on the wood. On the bottom side, the titles of the scenes are written in black ink. It says, "Girl who went to the sky" and "owl and mouse."
