Description:
Northwest Coast Indian—style canoe, blue with designs, holds two paddling, two seated, and one standing figure in right foreground on blue and green body of water. In right middle ground are five more canoes. In left middle ground is European—style three—masted sailing vessel and smaller boat with single tan rectangular sail carrying several figures. In background, deep green forested shore with large blue snow—capped and glaciated mountains dominates composition. Light blue sky has cloud forms in upper left corner. Single white mat; two—tone green wood frame with glass. CBJ Property #04571.
Inscription: "J. QUISENBERRY 1980" in lower right corner in pencil & blue watercolour.
Notes:
Acquired by Juneau Centennial Committee. Painting is artist's vision of meeting of Captain George Vancouver and Tlingit Indians on waters of Lynn Canal in summer of 1794. Mountain is Mt. Ernest Gruening (who was Governor of Territory of Alaska and later Senator after Statehood) is flanked by Herbert and Eagle Glaciers.
