Description:
Ink illustration published in the Juneau Empire by the artist Tony Newman. Four panel cartoon illustration telling the story of Juneau's truncated construction destruction projects. Illustration begins with a question in the first panel: "VISITING JUNEAU THIS SUMMER?" The first panel has a drawing of a bearded man's head holding a microphone. The second panel is titled: "THE GREAT SUBPORT PLAIN" and has a few people scattered around a wide flat plain. The third panel is titled: "THE FRONT STREET CRATER" and has stick figure people peering over a wall into a hole. The fourth panel is titled: "THE SHEER CLIFFS OF TELPHONE HILL" and has a drawing of two houses perched on a steep cliff with nothing below them.
Notes:
This cartoon refers to the large areas of downtown Juneau where through fire (downtown crater) or removal of old buildings (the subport plain) there were large empty spaces in an otherwise crowded and historic downtown area. The subport area is owned by Alaska Mental Health and development is stalled. The Front Street Crater occurred when a large old building was destroyed by fire in 2005 and the owners did not have insurance to rebuild. The "Sheer Cliffs of Telephone Hill" were the result of blasting being performed at the intersection of Front and Main Streets for the Downtown Parking Garage.
