Description:
Oil painting on canvas and Masonite. The viewer looks across rough, dark blue choppy seas, past floating red and black buoy to large white, red, and black steamship "Princess Sophia" grounded on a reef. Many passengers are visible on decks, and life boat is suspended part way to the water, filled (as are three others) with people. Dark blue stormy sky fills background. Ship's lights are on and smoke escapes from tall smokestack. Searchlight casts beam of light onto right of composition. Framed in antiqued gold—finished carved wood and fabric frame. Property # 04568. Inscription: "L. Cedric Janson @ 79" in lower LEFT corner.
Notes:
Acquired by the Juneau Centennial Committee. The Princess Sophia sank on Vanderbilt Reef, 30 miles north of Juneau in 1918. The ship became ledged, but a raging storm prevented passengers from being rescued. 343 people perished, no lifeboats were lowered. Used annually for Sea Week starting 1990, brought to Mendenhall Glacier Visitor's center in 2002 and 2003 for presentation by Channel Dive.
