Alaska Juneau Mining Co Tunnel 009B
Alaska Juneau Mining Company Tunnel in the Last Chance Basin. The company was organized in 1897. They purchased around 23 patented claims in Silver Bow Basin and first mined from open pits using their 30—stamp mill to process the ore. Two adits were driven over 400' below the open pits. In 1913, Gold Creek Tunnel (6,538 feet) was completed to access the ore in Silver Bow Basin and allow mining underground. The company established a mine camp in 1911 in "Jualpa Basin" (Now called "Last Chance Basin") and completed a large ball mill was south of Juneau by 1917. This photo also shows Snowslide Gulch, a major impediment to travel in the area.
