Description:
Black and white photo glued to old brown cardboard mat. Photo shows a huge crowd of men standing in the street, one holding a large flag in the front proper left, inscribed at the bottom with "DOUGLAS ISLAND UNION No. 109 W.F. of M. MAR. 22, 08" Six people in the front row have band instruments, including a drum with the words, "DOUGLAS ISLAND BAND ALASKA" Many of the men wear a large ribbon pinned to the proper left side of their coats, perhaps from the union. Sign for Dr. C.M. Harrision Dentist is visible on the street, and also a hardware and furniture store. On the reverse in pencil, "Aalto, Douglas" Mat is 13" x 10 3/4"
Notes:
W.F. of M. is likely the World Federation of Miners, and there is more in the Museum reference library about this organization.

Aalto is an old Douglas family, with August and Maria Aalto moving to Douglas by 1900. August worked for Treadwell and later the AJ, and the family biography appears in Gastineau Channel Memories Volume. I
