Title:
Variety of Political Handbills about Capital Move Legislation
Scope & Content:
A— Front has "No Legislative Move Ballot Measure 2" in Blue and Yellow on proper right side. On proper left side "Our best message to Capital Movers? "No" Vote no on ballot Measure #2 Your Vote is needed! Avoid long lines and crowds on election day by VOTING EARLY in two locations. Nugget Mall "Spam Can" To Vote absentee by mail, please hurry and call the Alaska Committee at 463—4305". On Back proper left image is ballot, proper right has "No Legislative Move Ballot Measure 2" in Blue and Yellow. There is a punch hole taken out on the proper right upper corner.
B— on Front "Looking for a reason to vote "No" on ballot measure 2? Pick one, with check boxes of reasons" in red. On back, "Ballot Measure 2 is clearly a "back door" attempt to move the entire capital. This would devastate the economy in Southeast, and every resident in the region would feel the effects. Vote NO on ballot measure 2 on November 5. This is one test we can't afford to fail."
C— On front: black and white image of garbage in black and white with dead fish on top. "Something Stinks!" in proper left upper corner. On back "Some things just shouldn't be recycled. Like the idea of a capital move, starting with the legislature. Tell them enough is enough. It is time to send this idea back to the landfill. Vote no on ballot measure 2 on November 5."
D— On front, color image of stack of pancackes with "All you can stomach" at the bottom. On back: "Sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomach. That's OK when it comes to the buffet line, but when it comes to moving the legislature, Alaska already has too much on its plate. With the fiscal gap fast approaching $ 1 billion and oil revenues on the decline, the pressure to balance the state budget has never been greater. Ballot measure 2 takes away your right to vote on the cost of moving the legislature to Anchorage, and then to the Mat—Su. What's more, the cost would go up as the State Capital moves with it. It's a questions of rights. Read your ballot carefully, Vote no on ballot measure 2 on November 5".
E— On front: black and white image of native fisherman with net, "For years they have denied us the chance to vote on subsistence (photography by Bill Hess)" On back: "Now they want to take away our right to vote on the cost of a legislative move. In 1994, 77 percent of Alaskans approved the FRANK initiative, which gives us the right to vote on the cost of a legislative or capital move. Ballot measure 2 would repeal that right. Vote NO on ballot measure 2 on November 5. Because this time we can let our voices be heard."
F— On front: Black and white image of children in a circle in a school room with "Can you think of more important ways to spend our money?" On back: "than moving the legislature? For too long, urban decision makers have controlled the affairs of rural Alaskans, without ever understanding their culture and way of life. Now they want to spend limited state dollars to move the legislature closer to Anchorage so that they can exercise even more control. Tell them we have more pressing needs like uniting Alaskans behind a subsistence solution and providing equitable statewide education to our children. Vote NO on ballot measure 2 on November 5."
G— On front, image of woman and child exchanging fish with "It's time to unite..." in upper proper left corner. On back: "not divide.
H— On front: black and white image of girl at a chalk board with "2+2=5" and "Something just doesn't add up. At a time when school districts are stuggling to keep teachers and pay for the basics, can we really afford to add to a billion—dollar deficit?" "No Legislative move ballot measure 2" in box on lower proper right corner. On back: "Proponents of ballot measure 2 would have you believe that moving the legislature to the Mat—Su is no more than simple addition — that moving lawmakers and their staff will make government more efficient. What they really want is to add your name to the bottom of a blank check. Ballot measure 2 takes away your right to know the cost of what will likely be two moves — first to Anchorage, and then to the Mat—Su. Alaska can't afford more funny math. It's a question of rights. Read your ballot carefully. Vote NO on ballot measure 2 on November 5".
